First off, let’s pretend it’s still January as I have/had every intention of posting one of these behind the scenes each month. My hope is that this demystifies some of the writing work I do. Writing is a funny thing with so much of happening in hidden places within our own souls. Perhaps, if I stop and reflect, I will also have the ability to say more clearly, “this. this is what I do as a writer.” We shall see.
On my wall in my little office are four giant post it panels. In the top corner of the first one I marked up at the beginning of this book’s process I wrote out a rough timeline of how this book could come to be in the midst of starting grad school and doing all that I was doing before. And the following line has been mocking me for the past month:
January BIG PUSH
welp. Such was not the case.
January held for me other priorities that ultimately outranked manuscript writing/wrestling. This is the hard part of writing, especially from home. The work can get pushed aside. Sometimes, that is necessary and good. But I am aware that as the pushing occurs, the lines blur and it becomes very difficult for me to discern if I need to stand up for my work and writing and demand it gets done.
